At Marian College a group of VCAL students explored making a suitcase that represented themselves.

We thought about the things that make us who we are.

If you were going off to a distant land with only a suitcase,

like so many of our ancestors,

what would be in it?

And what would this say about you?

Artist's statements about the work

This is my art work
The reason why I chose these colours on my box is because they’re my
favourite colours, I also chose to do pink on the outside and purple on
the inside. Because I feel like pink is such a bright colour and I am
very bright person so it represents me.

This is my art box.
The reason why I have chosen to do my box this way is because it
expresses all the things I love, whether it’s from colour to music.
The reason why I have chosen to paint the inside of my box purple is
because it’s my favourite colour. The music notes on the outside of my box is there because it states that I like any kind of music

This box I made has ribbons, feathers and ice pole sticks, pictures,
buttons and some felt. The pictures are of One Direction because they
are my favourite band.

This is my box that I made, it has things that I like. It has buttons, beads, ice pole sticks and pictures. The pictures are of Greece, which is the country I come from and some inspirational pictures.

I made this box from scratch. It was originally just two hard pieces of cardboard. It didn’t take me long at all to put it all together. The thing that took me the longest was to attach the pages from books to it. I decided to put the pages from books on the outside instead of painting it to let it have the vintage look that is also why its lock is two screws and a piece of wire. I honestly hate reading but I find that look I made interesting and different.

My work is about connecting specific locations with memories of persons I have traveled with, conversations, scenes flashing by, wind through open windows and changing seasons. These are compartmentalised within my mind, within this box

My suitcase is about life, journeys and experiences.

I like feathers so I just put feathers on it. I like to eat fruit, so I put the fruit inside of the suitcase.

My box has different pictures representing love, families and fashion.  I like pretty stuff and I want to be a fashion designer.

I was on the bus one day and I made a pigeon noise. Someone thought it was a pigeon and soon everyone was looking for it. So now I make pigeon noises more often.

Exquisite Me is an arts project that explores the collective experiences, stories and representations of identities of young people in Sunshine and Brimbank. These experiences, stories and representations will be explored during various art and writing workshops run by  community artist Debbie Qadri. The artwork and writing will be displayed as a large collaborative work, in a number of venues in Sunshine, including Gallery Sunshine Everywhere. Some of the artwork and writing will be published in a zine format and also made into an artist’s book for the Sunshine Library. Workshops will be held at schools, community groups and at Council facilities such as the Sunshine Library .

The self portraits were painted onto three canvases, so that they could be swapped around to make more portraits of people, as a metaphor for shared experiences and identities.

A new Exquisite Me project has started at Marian College. SSSHHHHHH! We are not telling what it is.

 This is a little collaborative artwork that we made today. Everybody chose from a series of questions, and wrote some sentences. the sentences were collaged onto this sketch of Janice. Thanks for posing Janice.

The text is:

My favourite person is Rhianna. I love her music and her fashion style.
I'm not quite sure what I will do in the future. Maybe travel and do something volunteer work because I like going to different places and helping. My favourite food is fish because I like fish. The one thing I am most scared of is the future. The most interesting thing I have ever seen is the Great Barrier Reef. In the future what I will do is get a job and live in a double storey house and have a lot of money because I like doing those things. I respect my mother because she's always working hard for us because she wants us to be happy and have a good future.
A story about someone I know:
Me and she got bored oneday so she pretended her foot was stuck in the gutter and I pretended to help her. She would pretend to cross the road and fall in.

What I want in the future is to be happily married with healthy kids and A LOT of money. ( smiley face)

My favourite activity is to play soccer, listen to music and work. I am scared of spiders and snakes.
My favourite food is chicken, salad, meat and some fruit. I'm quiet when I first meet someone then I start to open up a little more.
My favourite music is pop music.
Once I had a dream that Ryan Sheckler was trying to kill me. Then he let me hold his hand while he stabbed me in the cheek. The first time I went overseas I met more of my family. I also saw a lot of different cultures. That was a good adventure I had.
